Topics for Essays
(1) Autonomous shipping – how this will impact the shipping industry, including safety considerations and whether the Collision Regs 1972 will have a continuing role as ships become increasingly more automated.
(2) Bulk carrier casualties from the 1980s to the present day and can anything further be done to improve the safety record
(3) Greener shipping – is the shipping industry succeeding in achieving its goals and what more can be done?
(4) Is STCW Convention still fit for purpose? What could be done to improve it?
(5) How to tackle fair pay for seafarers?
- Three prizes will be awarded:
First prize of £3,000, Second prize – £2,000, Third prize – £1,000 - Open to anybody, up to and incl. 39 years old, interested in shipping or trade
- One of the above topics to be chosen – between 4000 and 7000 words in the English Language.
- Marking will be on the basis of originality, clarity, critical analysis and contribution to knowledge. The examiners will be an independent panel headed by Sir Nigel Teare.
- Winning entries may be published on the websites of the LSLC and the winners’ organisations. Further, such may be published in any journal which may accept entries.
Rules
The London Shipping Law Centre (LSLC) invites submissions for the LSLC Prize Essay Competition.
- Prizes: Three prizes will be awarded.
- Title: As per the attached list
- Eligibility: The competition is open to anybody interested in shipping or trade.
- Examination Panel: The ten best entries selected by the screening committee will be judged by an independent panel headed by Sir Nigel Teare.
The decisions of these bodies will be final. - To enter: Essays
- must be in the English language.
- must be unpublished
- must be between 4000 and 7000 words including footnotes.
- must be original (without the aid of AI)
- will be marked on the basis of originality, clarity, critical analysis and contribution to knowledge.
- Notification of intention to submit must be submitted by 31st December 2024 to: shipping@shippinglbc.co.uk An acknowledgement will then be sent by email to the candidate allocating to him/her a unique number. Final Essays must submitted before the 15th April 2025 as a pdf document attachment to an email addressed to: shipping@shippinglbc.co.uk
- Prize winners will be announced at the LSLC’s 30th Anniversary Dinner to be held at the Savoy on 19th June 2025.

- Publication: The best essays may be published on the web sites of both LSLC and LSLC-YMP and on those of the winners with attribution to the writer.
