13th Cad

The London Shipping Law Centre (LSLC) Founder and Chairman, Aleka Mandaraka-Sheppard, and the Rt Hon the Lord Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony, LSLC Vice President, welcomed the guests.

John Hayes MP, the UK Shipping Minister, attended demonstrating the support of the government to shipping.

Among the distinguished guests were numerous members of the UK judiciary and Jeffrey Evans, the chairman of Maritime London.

In her speech, Dr Mandaraka-Sheppard reminded the guests that shipping is the most important industry supporting worldwide trade and sustaining jobs and the economies of many nations. That is why the LSLC has promoted ‘Quality Shipping’ for two decades. She explained that:

“Over the past 20 years, through our seminars, debates, reviews, special events, and mock trials, the LSLC has had an important, and positive, influence on raising awareness in risk management, and on the development of shipping law and regulation… we have done this through the four pillars that support our work:

Leading maritime education and risk management,

Connecting people from all sectors of the industry,

Sharing knowledge and promoting our talent, and

Educating a wide spectrum of shipping professionals.”

The debate featured expert panelists Clay Maitland and Christine Berg of the European Commission. Under the expert moderation of Tradewinds Editor-in-Chief Julian Bray guests were treated to a brisk exchange of views over the important issue of regulation.

The motion was: “This House believes that parochial policies of regional regulators will wreck international shipping”. The debate focused on regional and international regulation and, in the end, our panelists both agreed that there should be less regulation and more risk management for quality shipping.

Joe Hughes and George Tsavliris gave special thanks to Dr Mandaraka-Sheppard for her two decades of dedication to advancing the cause of quality in shipping worldwide.

Recognition from various sources included the tribute to this as the “best ever Cadwallader event”.
